Get the right travel insurance covered
Always take out Travel Insurance well in advance of travelling. The policy will cover you for any medical expenses that you incur should you be involved in an accident or become ill and require hospitalisation.
Sometimes medical costs can be astronomic and without sufficient insurance cover you could end up in serious trouble. Apart from medical expenses the policy should also cover things like; legal expenses, cancellation & curtailment, loss of money, baggage & passport, repatriation and personal liability.
Make sure you are covered for any activity that you intend to undertake so that you and your equipment are covered while participating, e.g. skiing, scuba diving etc.You should always be insured when travelling. Travel insurance comes in all shapes and sizes and there are plenty of comparison sites out there which will help you find the right policy at the right price.
Think carefully about what you need. Many policies will try and entice you to pay extra for things you might not need, e.g. your flight getting delayed or cancelled due to a volcano. If you’re not sure about everything you’re going to do on your trip then it’s a good idea to look into what sort of sports cover your policy has. Maybe you’re going to Thailand and will fancy trying your hand at rock climbing at some point. Or maybe you’ll be in the Canada and will get a chance to go camping and hiking. It’s worth getting yourself covered for the things you know you might like to do, even if you haven’t yet planned on doing them.
Most insurance policies provide a basic level of cover for lost or stolen possessions. If you have any expensive items (e.g. a laptop or smartphone) then it might be worth paying a bit more to ensure they’re covered individually if you can’t get them included in your main cover. For instance, on my latest trip I have insured my laptop separately to everything else as it’s so much more expensive.
